Remove graffiti

We offer resources and tips on how to remove graffiti.

Overview

Free graffiti removal solvent

The City offers free quarts of graffiti removal solvent at all Minneapolis fire stations.

The solvent works well on most unpainted surfaces such as brick and stucco.

For best results, follow these tips:

  • Remove graffiti as soon as possible.
  • Apply the removal solvent to a small area first.
  • Check the results before using it on the entire area.

Best practices

  • Apply the remover and let it soak in to the surface. Scrub with a vinyl or wire brush and rinse with water.
  • The solvent is best for removing small amounts of graffiti or graffiti applied with a marker.
  • Be careful when using the remover on a painted surface. It can remove the original paint.
  • If possible, it's best to paint over graffiti on painted surfaces.

Ideal weather conditions

Graffiti removal is more successful in dry weather. Rain, snow and high humidity can make graffiti removal solvents less effective.

We recommend following these temperature guidelines:

Method Ideal temperature
Fire station solvent 17 degrees or higher
Other solvents Most temperatures
Pressure washer 32 degrees or higher to prevent icing
Sandblasting Any temperature, depending on surface type

Follow manufacturer instructions when using these methods.

Report graffiti

Report graffiti online or call 311. If possible, take pictures of the graffiti and send them with your report.
